Fitting a Vengenace: Theory Edition

So, Crucible 1.1 has hit, and Assault Frigates have been buffed. Time for a new fit.

Now, given the Vengeance received +1 high slot and +10 CPU, the obvious thing to do would be to simply throw a nos onto my old fit, say thank you for the ROF buff, and fly away in a strictly superior ship.

However, dps and vulnerability to neuts were not the reason I stopped flying the Vengeance. Can this new Vengeance solve some of the problems the old Vengeance suffered from?

What are we trying to fix?

I stopped flying the Vengeance for two reasons, both related to speed.

First, I'd all too often find myself warping to a belt/mission only to see my intended victim sitting 30 km away. Overheating my afterburner, I'd start towards them at a lazy 900ish m/s, and not be terribly surprised when they warped away before I got into overheated point range.

On a similar vein, if there was an impromptu gang fight, I'd find myself left out by all the mwd manoeuvring, unable to catch up to the larger (and supposedly slower) vessels.

Secondly, though, the Vengeance lacked the ability to evade any gangs and camps that I met on gates or at plexes. Too slow to either burn back to the gate or burn out of range, simple bad luck would cost me my ship. Wrong place, wrong time. I was once kited for 10 minutes by a Kestrel until his FW gang arrived. No amount of clever manoeuvring is going to throw a long point when you can't even crack 1 km/s overheated.

Problem > Solution > Problem

The obvious answer to my speed problem is fitting an mwd on my Vengeance, and the new role bonus makes this a far less painful solution than it once was.

That said, mwd frigates need to be very clear about what kind of targets they engage, and how, because a scram can just ruin their day. My other two mid slots and my utility high need to be devoted to the kind of fight I am looking for.

Potential target - AB/scram frigates/destroyers

While a scram does give me problems, it's not insurmountable. Fitting a neut in my high slot, for example, would shut down an enemy frigate's own prop mod and turn the fight into a straight up slugging match; the Vengeance is very good at that kind of fight.

I could fit a web for higher dps and a reduced speed disadvantage, or I could fit a cap booster to keep the neut and repair system running more smoothly. Some EFTing (when EFT gets updated) will give me an idea of the cap situation, and I suspect that these numbers would inform the booster/web decision. If a booster is called for, it raises the possibility of a second repair system.

Essentially, this fit would charge headlong into combat, and try to quickly shut down the active tank and manoeuvring systems of the enemy frigate/destroyer before brawling it down in a straight up dps/tank vs dps/tank fight; a battle Vengeance is uniquely well equipped to win.

Of course, the neut would be a wasted slot against larger ships. A cap booster could serve a dual role here, though, and help sustain the Vengeance against medium+ neuts. I would still need to get under the larger ship's guns (which might work, if they had no web, or no scram), however.

Alternatively, I could try a ranged kiting fit, but my Crow already does a far better job of that.

Potential target - cruiser+

Against this sort of target, the key thing is getting under their guns, so a secondary prop mod would probably be very useful - even if they don't have a scram, the sig bloom on an mwd (despite the role bonus) would probably make the job harder than it needs to be. It also eats cap that I will want for the repair system.

The good news is that these ships are very sluggish once you drop a scram on them, reducing our need for a web to maintain dps (although it is still useful for killing drones quickly). This makes fitting the afterburner relatively pain-free.

Obviously, a nos in the high slots would help enormously in countering enemy neuts.

Again, this fit would want to make a fast approach, but it would not look to overwhelm the target, but rather grind it away, countering any efforts to dislodge it.

Unlike the previous fit, though, this would be a very poor choice against ships outside it's intended engagement envelope; anything packing a web and scram will just leave if it looks like the Vengeance will win.

Decisions, decisions.

When I started this post, I had thought that I would end up wanting to try the "big game hunter" first, largely because my Crow already takes apart most ab/scram frigates.

However, with the cap booster rather than a web (which is something I came up with while typing), the "cap attack" Vengeance reminds me of what I was trying to do in my early days with the Punisher until I realised that it could not sustain an active tank and a neut. Perhaps with a cap booster, the Vengeance can (or, like the Punisher, it could fit a buffer tank).

It also looks like the "cap attack" Vengeance would not be terrible against pve fit cruiser+ because of the Vengeance's innate cap regen bonus (although the mwd penalty will affect this). This gives it a wider engagement envelope, which is always good when roaming.

And that's a good thing.

Feeling Rusty (part 2)

The hunt:

Returning to the Hev station after my Malediction loss, I reshipped to my trusty Vengeance. I double checked the loadout and the cargo hold, and slipped back into space.

At first I had trouble finding the Bellicose and I feared that I would be denied the opportunity for a rematch. However, he reappeared after a short while; perhaps he was just replenishing his drone supply.

I warped back in on him at another belt, and the fight was on at once.

I knew he had neuts, but I didn't really care; the Vengeance is not a dancer, it's a brawler. Orbiting at 500m seemed good. Predictably, I'm neuted at once, which strangely gave me a degree of confidence; the Bellicose did not really understand how this fight was going to work.

My cap regen is just silly, so I had no problem activating any of my non-repair system mods. Using my web, I turned my attention to the drones and destroyed them with the Caldari Navy Foxfire I had preloaded. The second wave of drones received the same treatment.

At this point, we both moved into the second phase of the fight. I reloaded to Gremlin Rage to break his shield tank, and he had eaten through my shields and was hitting my armor. This meant I now had to try squeezing repair cycles out between his neut cycles, and because I'm using a Coreli repair system (as opposed to the more cap hungry, but powerful, Centi repair system) I was able to do so.

I started pummeling him with overheated launchers, but switched off the overheat once my launchers hit 50%; this was going to be an endurance fight and I could not afford to burn anything out. I also noticed that I had missed one of his drones, presumably because my targeting system had been full when I initially engaged them. I could not effectively engage it with Rage rockets, so I'd have to just let it be. The damage was low, but every little bit helped him.

The next few minutes seemed like hours; they were very, very tense. My entire focus was on keeping my modules online and maximising my my rep cycles. I didn't even notice Kaal pull up in his Harbinger and ask if I wanted help. After not receiving a response, Kaal simply parked himself next to the fight to watch.

We both entered structure together, but he had far more structure than I did. Still, my rep cycles were putting me back up into armor each time, so it was simply a matter of timing. Would his shot catch me right at the bottom of a rep cycle, or would I grind him down?

As it turns out, luck was on his side and a "solid hit" at just the wrong time turned my hull to scrap.

Afterthoughts:

As we both warped our pods away (and Kaal scooped my loot and started salvaging - thanks, Kaal!), we wished each other enthusiastic "gfs

However, I'm pretty disappointed in my performance; this fight could have easily been won outright if I had screwed up less.

1) Although I knew the Bellicose was shield tanked, I preloaded Caldari Foxfire, not Caldari Gremlin. Yes, that was mostly to shoot at the drones, but there was some shooting at the Bellicose between waves. I only needed another 500ish damage to win, so squeezing a little more dps out of that initial exchange could have won it for me.

2) I should have checked my overview rather than relying on my autotargeting system to determine if all the drone had been cleared. One drone, over several minutes, almost certainly made the difference between a win and a loss here. I'm satisfied that, after having screwed up, I did not compound my error by then trying to clear that last drone, but it should simply never have happened.

3) I did not reactivate the overheat on my launchers at the end of the fight. Killing the overheat early was fine, but I should have turned it back on when we entered into structure. Again, this would have probably made the 500 damage difference that I needed to win.

4) I did not overheat my repair system or pop my Exile pill. This was REALLY dumb. I had it in my head that this would increase my cap usage, which I could not afford. It's true that overheating my repair system would have caused it to cycle faster (which means it uses cap faster), but it makes no difference to the individual cap cost per cycle. Instead, I would have repaired an extra 20% or so, which would have turned this into an easy win. Popping the Exile would have done the same thing, with no cap consequences at all.

So, without trying to diminish or excuse my opponent's win, I really snatched defeat from the jaws of victory here. I've simply spent too much time away from the game (unavoidable) and too much time (when I am playing) freeloading in fleets. That's not strictly fair, I suppose, but fleet work does focus on a very different skill set, so I have allowed my solo skills to atrophy.

I need to do something about that. I think I'll probably spend the next month or so avoiding fleets if I can (except perhaps black ops) and focusing on those long distance solo roams I used to do so often. I'll probably die lots, and lose a ton of ISK, but if I can get back on top of my game it will be worth it.

For anyone that wants to fight a Vengeance, however, I'll point out my opponent's initial mistake, which was turning on the neuts too soon. As you can see from my bat-rep, a Vengeance can easily run everything except the repair system under neuts; the cap regen is simply that good, even without rigs.

That meant that Siva's own cap was suffering, which had consequences later in the fight, as there were a couple of periods where he must have turned off his neuts to avoid capping out. If he had not burned cap when it didn't matter, he could have kept the pressure up. Instead, he should have waited until I actually started using the armor repair system before starting the neuts.

As an aside, it seems that Lady Luck loves a fool, as Kaal was able to recover my deadspace repair system and salvage an intact armor plate. With the other loot taken into account, I'm probably actually ahead, financially.

Vengeance v Taranis

The hunt:

I was cruising around the Hevrice area when I ran into Taranis in Meutrelle. Now, it was a while ago, so my recollection on this point was a little fuzzy, but I think he asked me for a 1v1. I refused, of course, but did mention that I was going to be hanging about at the 2nd cluster for a while. This kind of loose talk gets me into trouble from time to time, and this was no exception; he decided to jump in on me uninvited!

The fight was not the graceful dance you might expect from a frigate fight. We were both close range brawlers, and we went at each other hammer and tongs. I had heard of the Taranis's face melting dps, but I had assumed that it would not, as a mere interceptor, be able to significantly threaten my Vengeance.

I don't think I need to trot out the old cliche about assumptions, do I?

He was AB fit, and he was packing a web, so he was able to dictate the range. Shockingly, he decided to get right up close so that his blasters could do their work.

I counter webbed, of course, but mostly as a dps boost. As he wanted to get in close I decided to oblige as it would (possibly) mess with his tracking, but it would also keep his speed lower than if I tried to pull range. Lower speed is good for my rockets.

It did not take me long to realise that I was going to lose this damage race, so I overheated my launchers (which I had loaded with faction, rather than rage, because of his high speed and low signature) as well as my repair system. I also popped a synth exile, all the while wishing it had been a standard pill. Was it enough to shift the momentum of the fight?

Barely, as it turns out.

Fights like these do not require great piloting skills; you simply set your ship in motion, turn on everything, overheat the important stuff, and then wait to see if it was enough. In this case, it was. But it was a close call.

Afterthoughts:

I know blasters have a bad reputation, and I rarely see blaster boats about. But whenever I run into one they give me a much closer fight, hull for hull, than any other kind of weapon system. If I had not been flying a maxed out, deadspace fit, syth supported ship, I would have been toast. The fact that the Gallente interceptor can pull a trick like that against an assault frigate is very impressive.

In fact, there's a chance he could have turned it around despite my best efforts. Probably out of habit, he seemed to set his orbit to 500m or so. This brought his speed down, which improved my dps. If he had instead set his range to something slightly higher (assuming his blasters could continue to operate in optimal) he would have increased his speed and my damage would have fallen slightly. The fight was so close that this sort of thing could have potentially swung the result.

Taurean Eltanin v Darius Carnifex (part 2)

The hunt:

The next time I saw Darius, I had just jumped into Vif, looking for targets. Not seeing anything of interest in system, I burned back to the gate to continue my roam.

Just before I hit the gate, two ships landed. The first was Darius in his Dramiel, and the second was a neutral pilot in a Loki. Because they had clearly warped in together, I assumed that the Loki was a boosting alt for Darius.

Darius jumped through the gate, while the neutral Loki engaged me. I had to smile. There was no way I could kill the Loki, but if I engaged then I would be unable to jump out when Darius jumped back in. And if I just jumped through, Darius could try to catch me. Cute.

Of course, I jumped. I knew from past experience that Darius was no real danger in his Dram, and I could either warp away or burn back to the gate before the Loki was able to join him. I also put the word out on vent; perhaps someone nearby would like a shot at the Loki.

However, as I loaded grid I saw that Tawa had landed on the gate in his Jaguar, and had engaged Darius. I moved to assist, but the two ships were much faster than me, and so it was a hopeless act. I turned and started heading back to the gate.

I must have lost track of time, though, because the Loki jumped through much earlier than expected. He immediately pointed and webbed me and opened fire. I overheated my repair system, but exploded about 1km from the jump radius of the gate.

Unfortunately, Tawa was also unable to escape, as the Dram kept him pointed until the Loki was finished with me (unlike me, he had aggressed, so burning to the gate was not an option).

Afterthoughts:

I messed up pretty badly here, and I'm not afraid to admit it. I was in no danger at all until I burned off the gate (knowing there was a Loki waiting to jump through), and even then I would have been fine if I had remembered to either a) keep better track of time, or b) overheat my freaking afterburner.

So yeah, I earned this lossmail by snatching defeat from the jaws of... warping away.

However, I now understand why Darius was trying to goad Wolf and I into hanging around after my first encounter with him: he had his neutral Loki on the way! When he saw that he could not break my tank he probably powered up the alt and tried to keep me in play until the Loki got their.

Glad I warped away when I did, then.

I have to admit being surprised by the aggressive use of the Loki, though. There are one or two boosting alts in the Tuskers, but they tend to be used primarily to scout, probe, or boost. I don't think I've ever seen them used in actual combat. But then, we're space poor pirates that can't afford to risk massive isk investments like that. That said, the Loki was clearly in no danger engaging a couple of flashy assault ships on a gate.

Still, this loss, which Tawa and I stumbled into, probably explains why we acted the way we did when we encountered Darius again later that day...

Taurean Eltanin v Darius Carnifex (part 1)

The hunt:

When I first wrote up this post, I titled it "Vengeance v Dramiel". However, before publishing the post, I had a couple of other fights with the same pilot, and I thought it was worth linking them together as they share some common threads. Hence the unusual title.

I encountered Darius for the first time when I jumped into Jovannion from Aeschee. He was in his Dramiel, and I was in my Vengeance. He was flashy, and I was flashy. You see where this is going, I hope.

So we engaged each other. In truth, he engaged me, as he was kiting fit and he was in no mood to get close. Darius opened fire, and launched his drones.

Being unable to target the Dramiel, I proceeded to target the drones. I destroyed one or two before they were recalled, and at that point the fight developed into a stalemate. He couldn't break my tank (or even my passive shield regen), and I couldn't get a scram on him, no matter how much fancy flying I tried.

I was fairly relaxed about the fight because I knew I could simply de-aggress and leave; had we been at a belt, I would have been stuck until help arrived, but this was not the case. Instead, I used the opportunity to practice my manual piloting. I managed to get an overheated web on him a few times, but never a scram. I could hit him with my Javelin rockets, but he would simply pull range until his shields regenerated.

Eventually, Wolf jumped in with his own Dram, and I invited him to have a go at Darius. Wolf was in a slower build, though, and with no web he could not hold Darius in place. After relaunching his drones Darius started eating away at Wolf's tank, but I quickly put a stop to that with my rockets. Without the drones, Darius could not break Wolf either.

Eventually, Wolf and I got bored and warped off (evading Wolf meant that Darius could not actually keep either of us pointed, so we did not have to use the jump gate).

Now my initial writeup ends here, because I don't usually comment on the character of my opponents unless it is in a positive way. However, what followed has some significance in the light of later events. You see, Darius started talking smack.

Not particularly creative or crude smack, but smack nonetheless. He denigrated the Tuskers and the fighting prowess of our corp, as well as our own moral fortitude for "running away". More bemused than anything else, I simply told him that he could not break our tanks and we could not catch him, so we would all probably enjoy spending our time doing something else.

Afterthoughts:

This was my first real fight against a Dramiel, and I can't say I was too terribly impressed. Sure, the ship was fast, and it was certainly irritating to fight, but from where my Vengeance sits there are plenty of ships that can kite me all day.

At the time, I did not understand what Darius thought he would achieve by acting out in local. In the light of subsequent events, however, I now think I have a pretty good idea...

Things are changing

For the longest time, I've been a huge fan of my little Vengeance. It's a ship with the same strengths and weaknesses as me; slow to react but highly resilient and doggedly determined. It's allowed me to ease into New Eden without pushing myself as a pilot; I can focus on learning how to actually play the game.

More and more, however, I find myself dissatisfied with my Vengeance. I appreciate that my timing is poor - they just decided to buff assault ships - but there it is.

The problem, you see, is that I am losing ships to bad luck, rather than bad piloting. When I screw up, I'm happy  (not really happy, per se, but you know what I mean) to suffer the consequences. But when I just randomly lose ships to "circumstances", it drives me crazy.

The hunt:

Yesterday, I was flying around in a frigate gang, and we had gone roaming up to Anamake and the surrounding area, looking for a fight. We hadn't had much luck, and we were heading up towards where the Sinners live, because we were sure we would find some trouble there.

So, I jumped through the next gate in the sequence and loaded grid. I saw a neutral Curse sitting on the gate with his drones out. The Curse is not the tankiest of ships, so it seems an odd one to camp with, but that did indeed seem to be what the Curse was doing.

After alerting the following gang, I considered my options as I sat in cloak. He was 14 km from me, and I could either burn back to the gate or try and warp off. Being neuted and webbed while I tried to get back to the gate seemed pretty poor, so I decided to try and warp out.

Turns out, though, that the Curse was of the insta-lock variety, and I was pointed as soon as I broke cloak. I tried to burn away, but I was capped out immediately, and  I moved a grand total of about 3km before I went  down.

Afterthoughts:

Because of the Curse's fit, neither of my options would seen me survive the encounter. And as I warped my pod out, I could not help but think how differently this would have worked out if I were in my Malediction. When I face gate camps in my interceptor, I simply align to a celestial and activate my mwd. I then start spamming the warp button.

Even if I'm instantly capped out, the 10 seconds or so of mwd cycle I get moves me about 40km, which is beyond the range of all but the most insane points. So even when I'm instant locked, I'm typically clear of the camp after a few seconds, and none of the heavy hitters stand any chance of catching me.

Yes, my Malediction is fragile, and I die a lot. But when I die, I die because I screwed up, or because I don't have enough SP invested in my ship. And I'm alright with that.

This loss is not just a "one off"; many of my September losses were due to similar camps, or to being kited, or whatever. Encounters where my only chance was to hope that my enemy screwed up. And I seem to have competent enemies.

For various reasons, October is not going to be a very active month for me, but by the start of November I should have Covert Ops V trained, and a few Purifier hulls to play with. I'll also probably get Interceptors to V, along with some of the nav skills I've been neglecting. I want more control over my encounters, now, and hopefully the Malediction and the Purifier will offer me that.

Vengeance & Rifter v Cyclone

The hunt:

This is an older kill that I forgot to post, but as it was a little different from my usual approach I thought I'd post it now.

I had scanned down a missioning Cyclone in Aeschee and made an attack run. Unfortunately, he was a long way from the warp in point, so he simply warped to a station. The pilot did not immediately leave system, however, and did not seem to abandon the mission. I tried waiting at the warp in, but he made no move to return.

Guessing that he was watching local, I reached out for assistance. At that time Cable Udan was not yet a Tusker, but his application to join the corp had been submitted on our forums. Knowing that he was in the region, I convo'd him and asked if he wanted to help catch a Cyclone. He did.

I created a fleet and invited Cable to join. Once he had done so, I asked him to warp to me (in the mission) and sit at the warp in point. After he was settled, I jumped into Jovannion and sat on the other side of the gate.

At this point it was a waiting game. If the Cyclone was keeping his eye on his mission with a narrow beam scan he would see right through our ploy. However, because there were no other Tuskers in system there was a chance that he would simply warp back to the mission once he saw me leave local. Sure enough, only a few minutes had passed before the Cyclone jumped back.

Cable immediately landed point on the Cyclone and I jumped back into Aeschee. Warping to Cable, the only question on our minds was whether or not Cable's Rifter would hold out long enough for me to land and take over point.

Impressively, his tank held out, despite the drones. As soon as I landed I started to clear the drones; a task we had agreed Cable would start as soon as he had locked down the Cyclone - a few extra seconds of dps on the battlecruiser were meaningless compared to mitigating the drone damage. Between the two of us, the drones did not last long.

Switching from Caldari Navy to Rage, I opened fire on the Cyclone. Cable and I whittled away his tank until, finally, his hull gave out.

Afterthoughts:

It's always nice to see a plan come together. Being flashy, and a member of a notorious pirate corporation, the element of surprise is a rare treat.

As a bonus, the exercise gave me a chance to fly with Cable before he joined the Tuskers; because of my restricted play hours I sometimes find it difficult to fleet up with the new members joining the corp in this current round of recruitment.

Vengeance et alia v Ashimmu

The hunt:

It started when I encountered a Daredevil flown by a pilot named Vim. Now that I have more experience with being kited, I tend to engage kiters on gates whenever possible; the increased danger of "adds" is worth the ability to just disengage and leave.

Vim had engaged me on the gate, and we had spent some time dancing about. Thanks to my Javelin rockets, I could hit him just fine. In fact, I could easily burn him down. But with a 90% web on me, I couldn't make him stick around long enough to kill him.

Eventually, he either called for backup, or a number of other faction frigates coincidentally showed up to help him out. I popped an exile booster, turned off my weapons, and simply tanked their damage for 60 seconds before jumping out.

I moved on with my roam, and some time later ended up hitting a mission runner with a few other Tuskers. While the frigates were still waiting out their GCC, I spotted Vim again, this time in an Ashimmu.

A quick discussion ensued, and, while none of us had ever fought an Ashimmu before - the Tusker recruitment drive means there are a fair number of newer players in corp right now - we agreed that we could probably take him. 90% webs and bonused neuts meant that he would probably take one or more of us with him, but we should be able burn him down. It was, we decided, a worthwhile sacrifice to take down a pirate faction cruiser.

Well, I probably don't need to tell most of you how this ended. Like lambs to the slaughter, we jumped the Ashimmu at a belt. It turns out, no matter how dangerous 90% webs and bonused neuts seem on paper, it's far, FAR worse in real combat.

Against the Daredevil, 90% web simply meant not being able to hold him or escape. Fine, we thought, we'll kill him quick and accept that we can't escape. Against the Ashimmu, however, it means you take full damage from his cruiser class weapons. Oh, and your tank no longer works.

Afterthoughts:

I can't speak for the others, but I felt really, really stupid afterwards. The fight had been so one sided that I couldn't believe we had thought we stood a chance. Lesson (painfully) learned.

My little Vengeance kept on giving, though. In addition to denying Vim my deadspace armor repair, I also received an Intact Armor Plate when I brought my Malediction back to salvage the wreck. In a bizarre twist, I had actually turned a profit on my foolishness.

A common thread.

Recently, I've suffered a series of losses. Although individually unremarkable, I'm fairly alert to trends in the way I fly, and I feel that these losses, as a group, are significant.

I've already posted about this fight. Toothslayer got the jump on my Vengeance in his Sabre. Although I did not try to escape, actually doing so would have been very difficult; I'm not in a fast ship. In hindsight, though, Tsubutai is correct (no surprise there); hitting him with an overheated scram and web while burning for a celestial was my best shot.

On the other hand, this fight was one that simply escalated beyond my control. You can probably guess exactly what happened just by looking at the lossmail. Again, by the time things went bad, and the battlecruisers had landed, I was too committed to escape.

This, on the other hand, was not even a fight; just a massive fleet sitting on the other side of a gate. While I can evade casual camps as well as any frigate, that much manpower means that someone is going to have an instalock, and there is too much dps to be able to burn back to the gate, especially once the webs start landing.

My most frustrating loss is this one. I jumped into a FW plex with a Kestrel in it. He began kiting me, and then a million of his friends jumped in on us. Only a few of them got on the killmail, though, because as soon as local spiked I started burning away from the warp in; most of his friends could not reach me before the fast ones killed me. Lag got my pod, too.

The common thread here is that I was too slow to evade fights I could not win. This is part of flying a Vengeance, and I'm not complaining; all ships have their pros and cons. However, I clearly need to be more cautious, as I've lost over 60 million ISK of ships this month to situations I should have simply avoided.

Part of the problem, if you can call it that, is that I'm winning pretty much every fight that is anything remotely close to "fair". I'm taking down virtually every T1 frigate, destroyer and cruiser I meet, and most T2 frigates as well. As a result, I've grown pretty easy to bait with these ships (see the FW blob), and less alert to danger generally.

I need to do something about that, and part of that process is going to involve breaking out of the slight rut I seem to be in. I'm going to move to my upgraded fit earlier than intended - the extra cost ought to keep me alert! - and I'm also going to start testing the waters with boosters.

Equally, though, I'm going to mess about with some mwd ships. This is something I've avoided, but it's going to be a critical skill for me to master for my bomber and any interceptors that I fly. To begin with, I'll throw together some Maledicton fits and take them out for a spin. I'll also give that mwd Vengeance FNG recommended a try.

So expect the occasional departure from your regular programming.

Vengeance v Rupture

The hunt:

Encouraged by my recent above class kill, I decided to jump in on this Rupture when I otherwise might not have. I found him in Jovannion, which is a fairly quiet system, so I thought would have the time to wear him down.

Jumping into the belt where he was ratting, I landed close enough to establish point right away. I then moved in under his guns and waited for the million ISK question to answer itself: did he have a neut? Apparently not.

After killing the drones, I had all the time in the world; he couldn't hit me except with his missiles, and I easily tanked those. Eventually, he went boom.

I also managed to catch his pod and we had been on the verge of agreeing a 15 million ISK ransom when a Sabre jumped in! It was my old friend toothslayer, and he wasted no time in engaging me.

Well and truly caught by surprise, I did my best to rally. I destroyed the pod, primarily as the fastest way of clearing my targeting, while moving into a tight orbit around the Sabre. I had no idea if that was the right move or not; I knew nothing about fighting T2 destroyers.

Clearly, it was time to overheat everything, and I started chewing into the destroyer. However, I had rat aggro, and in a dps race like this the small delay in getting my guns on target was telling. Ultimately, I was unable to overcome that initial handicap.

Still, I managed to get my pod out, this time.

Afterthoughts:

From the safety of, well, a safe spot, I congratulated toothslayer on his ambush. I also told him about the ransom he had cost me, effectively doubling the cost of my loss.

Initially, toothslayer did not feel that the loss of the ransom was significant one way or another, but I pointed out that piracy was my sole source of income - I have no second account. He had, effectively, managed to do the equivalent of gank a pirate while missioning! Surely this was an occasion for lols all round; that kind of irony does not happen every day.

While some people try very hard to shrug off their losses ("meh, I didn't really like that carrier anyway", "I've got five more in the station", etc), I'm generally pretty happy to give the winner his due. Equally, toothslayer has always been a courteous opponent, so I have no problem letting him know the true extent of his victory. I've never seen much mileage in trying to misrepresent my situation - especially as I'm just going to be blogging about it in a week or two anyway.

However, in this case my after battle chatter had an unexpected consequence; toothslayer dropped 30 million ISK into my wallet to reimburse me for the ship and the lost ransom. Apparently he likes blowing me up so much, he wants to make sure I keep undocking!

On a more serious note, though, I think Mara summed it up well in her recent post: "be gracious win or lose; you never know when unexpected random acts of kindness will come your way."

It's as true for carebears as it is for pirates; yesterday I sent a million ISK to a noob I killed because he fought well, made a sensible ransom offer (which I declined), and was courteous throughout. Assuming he insured his ship, he actually turned a profit on our fight.

A question of timing.

The hunt:

I'm breaking the chronology here, and delaying the post that I had originally planned for today. Instead, I'm going to talk about last night, because it was a pretty frustrating night, and sometimes you just have to get something like that out of your system.

It started when I logged on after work. Wherever I went, the systems were empty, but reports of enemy action would pour in from somewhere else. By the time I reached somewhere else, all would be quiet, and the action would be elsewhere.

In particular, I missed out on a 95 million ISK ransom because I was still one jump away when the fight ended. That's when I became certain that I was going to lose my ship that night.

I seriously considered logging off , but decided to see the night through. It's easy to pvp when everything is going right, but pulling through the tough spells is what helps you grow as a pilot.

Not too long after the missed ransom, I ran into a large fleet sitting on the Onne - Aeschee gate; I had wanted to join a fight that had broken out Adirain, but I didn't make it through the camp.

Heading back to Hevrice to reship, I got a report of a missioning Brutix in Melmaniel. By the time I had reshipped, however, the large fleet was moving through Hev and towards Melmaniel. We all sat tight and gave them time to move on. Twenty minutes gone.

Eventually, I reached Costelle and sat on the Melmanial gate with a couple of other Tuskers. Difficulties with our prober lead to more delay. When the Brutix was probed down, we all jumped into the system, but for some reason the "squad warp" command didn't take. That meant our prober ended up warping to the mission alone.

Whe she landed, we all warped to her, but in the intervening time the Brutix had moved 30km off our warpin (there were no rooms in the mission). He simply warped out as we burned towards him.

Demoralised and frustrated, I called it a night, and made my way back to Hev. Just as I was about to dock, however, Suleiman told us he had a ratting Loki in Oulletta, so I turned around and started back the way I had come. The other Tuskers from the Brutix attempt were closer, of course, so they make a go of it before I got there. Unfortunately, the Loki slipped point and escaped.

I reached the Oulletta gate, and sat there with the other Tuskers, waiting for the Loki to venture out again. A flashy Falcon and Hurricane jumped into us, and we engaged.

We assumed that the Falcon would just warp off, so I pointed and attacked the Hurricane first. When the Falcon jammed us all, however, we switched primary to him.

As we battered the Falcon, the Hurricane neuted us out and started trying to pick us off. Bartomeu, flying the largest ship on our side, lost his Rupture to the larger vessel. Struggling to manage our mods through the neuts, and tanking the damage from the Hurricane, we nevertheless managed to down the Falcon just as Suleiman (who had been baiting the Loki) jumped in.

We immediately turned our attention to the Hurricane, but the neuts and the damage began to add up. We still would probably have carried the field, though, until the Vagabond jumped in. At that point we lost Khronin's Wolf.

The Hurricane was hurting, though, and we had broken his shield tank. However, when the Vagabond started bumping people, in combination with the Hurricane's constant neuting, they both were able to make good their escape.

Completely burnt out, I returned to Hev to log for the night, while other Tuskers worked on salvaging the wrecks.

Afterthoughts:

Not a great night, really. I lost another Vengeance, which hits my profitability, and I missed several other opportunities for lucrative combat.

In hindsight, I'm still glad I stayed online, though. Even on bad days, I love playing Eve and flying with my fellow Tuskers.

Vengeance & Firetail v Rupture

The hunt:

I was roaming around Essense when I spotted a Rupture on Dscan. It's been a while since I tried to solo a Rupture, so I decided to jump in and say hello.

It was a fellow flashy, a pilot around the same age as me, and he was keen to fight too. As we moved towards each other I slipped under his guns, and began working on his drones. Fortunately, he had no neut, so I was able to buffer tank the drones and his guns (which were landing glancing hits) long enough to clear the drones and let my active tank repair the damage.

At this point, the fight was a foregone conclusion if nothing changed. He could not break my tank, and it was only a matter of time before I broke his. However, I was very conscious that we were sitting at a celestial in a busy system. I also knew that next door, in Aeschee, there were about 15 other pirates, and at any moment I might find that I had company.

So, when Valgore wandered by and asked if I wanted a hand, I decided that waiting (and hoping) for a solo killmail was not good business sense. Better safe than sorry, and all that.

Even with our combined firepower, it still took us a long time to break his tank, but we got there in the end.

We did manage to point his pod, but he declined a ransom.

I handled the loot split, paying Valgore 3.5 mil for his half (and I must remember that for the monthly accounts).

Afterthoughts:

Looking at the killmail, the Rupture's tank was just nuts; TWO 1600mm plates and two Trimarks. Ugh. No wonder he took so long to kill.

Even without a solo killmail, it felt great to be soloing above class ships again. I've been quite conservative with my target selection, but this kill, against a pvp fit Rupture (albeit, one with no neuts), has encouraged me to widen my engagement envelope. Of course, targets are as much chance as anything else, but hopefully I'll have the opportunity to take on some more cruisers solo.

With several alternative fits in my Vengeance's future, I'm also looking at my fights to see which kind of fit would have served me best. Here, the DPS fit was probably the weakest fit; I needed my buffer to tank his dps while I killed the drones, and then some decent remote repair to restore my buffer and tank the remaining damage.

Fitting a Vengeance: Refining my Fit

As I get closer to maxing out my Vengeance skills, I'm looking more and more at flying a maxed out Vengeance. Alright, perhaps not "maxed out" - I'm still scratching a living off of my piracy - but certainly an upgraded fit.

The fits are all quite similar, so I'll cover the obvious stuff first:

Highs: 4 Rocket Launcher II
Mids: Full Tackle
Lows: Damage Control II, Adaptive Nano Plating II

This leaves me with two "open" low slots, and two rigs.

Standard Vengeance

This is my current fit, and I include it as a baseline. It puts an EANMII and a Small Armor Repairer II in the lows, an a Small Anti-thermic Pump and Small Warehead Calefaction Catylist in the rig slots. Like all my fits, it's cap stable. All DPS figures calculated with Rage rockets.

DPS: 116 (136 overheated)
HPS: 113 (146 overheated  - although not cap stable)
EHP: 9937
Speed: 818 m/s (1064 m/s overheated)

Tank Fit

This fit puts an EANMII and a Centii C-type Small Armor Repairer in the lows, and a Small Anti-thermic Pump and a Small Capacitor Control Circuit II in the rig slots.

DPS: 105 (124 overheated)
HPS: 140 (181 overheated!)
EHP: 9937
Speed: 818 m/s (1064 m/s overheated)

A significant damage reduction in exchange for massive active tank and tremendous capacitor regeneration; having flown with the T1 CCC, I know that it is very difficult to neut me out with a single neut. Moving to a T2 CCC, the it would take two neuts to shut down my armor repairer, and everything else continues to function just fine.

Balanced Fit

This fit copies the Standard Fit, but upgrades the repairer to a Coreli C-type and the Calefaction Catylist to T2. No other changes.

DPS: 121 (143 overheated)
HPS: 124 (161 overheated - not cap stable)
EHP: 9937
Speed: 818 m/s (1064 m/s overheated)

Effectively, a modest dps and hps boost over what I am currently flying.

DPS Fit

A Balistic Control System II and a Coreli C-type Armor Repairer in the Lows, along with a Small Anti-thermic Pump and Small Warhead Calefaction Catylist II in the rig slots.

DPS: 147 (173 overheated!)
HPS: 98 (127 overheated - not cap stable)
EHP: 8594
Speed: 818 m/s (1064 m/s overheated)

This fit trades over 1k EHP and a significant chunk of it's active tank to achieve a level of dps you don't usually find on a Vengeance.

My thoughts

Right now, I'm leaning towards the "Balanced Fit". That's not terribly surprising, because it's very similar to what I'm flying now; it's in my comfort zone.

However, the other two fits have obvious advantages. The Tank Fit wins wherever your own dps is irrelevant, such as when you are burning back to a gate after jumping into an instant-lock camp. It is also excellent for wearing down buffer fit ships, and most T1 and T2 frigates cannot break it's tank.

On the other hand, the Tank Fit invests a great deal in it's tank, and does not hold up as well in situations where the tank is not relevant, such as where multiple neuts are being applied, or you are trying to burn down the enemy before their backup arrives. Here, of course, the DPS Fit shines. It's also the only fit that can reliably break a Drake's passive tank solo - Azual puts the typical Drake's peak recharge at around 150HPS.

Given two extremes, I tend to gravitate towards a middle ground, and so it is with fits. Still, I throw the floor open for comments, as there are almost certainly factors I have not considered.

Vengeance et alia v Jaguar & Ishkur

The hunt:

A fellow Tusker had told us that there was a frigate gang in Agoze (that included a Dramiel and two Jags), and that this gang was looking for a fight. Several of us quickly formed a frigate gang of our own, and raced to the scene.

We decided that I would act as bait by sitting at a belt. Subtle, right? Actually, I would be aligned to another celestial, and I would warp as soon as company arrived. This would give me a chance to scope out the other gang. If it were manageable, I could let them "catch" me at the second celestial, and the rest of the Tuskers would jump in.

Warping to the belt, I kept an eye on my D-scan. There were several assault frigates in local, but I could not see the Dram. Perhaps he was docked up? I did not have much time to ponder this before a Jaguar jumped in.

I warped to the second celestial, keeping an eye on my overview for the Jag's backup, but saw nothing. They clearly suspected bait, and wanted to test the waters before committing.

That seemed reasonable, so I decided to let the Jag catch me when I came out of warp. I also reduced my Dscan to short range only, so I would see other ships arriving. The Jaguar actually assumed I was more cunning than I actually am; he warped to the celestial at 100km, whereas I had warped to zero.

Oh, well. I turned towards him and prepared to engage, while the Jaguar did the same. We had not even reached point range when my short range scans showed another assault ship within a couple of AU, so I called in my fellow Tuskers as backup.

The Jaguar and I engaged; I had plenty of time to select ammunition, and he seemed to have trouble breaking my tank. Before we could really test each other, however, my backup arrived, and the Jag was facing a 3v1.

Handling it like a man, the Jag immediately switched fire to something a little softer. He also must have called for backup, because an Ishkur landed shortly thereafter (and it's worth noting that this was NOT the assault ship I had seen on Dscan when I called for backup - he must have just been passing through).

They must have overheated everything, because they burned into our Wolf at an alarming rate. Despite the four Tuskers pouring fire into them, the plucky duo managed to down Grog Drinker!

Afterthougths:

These guys really did their corp proud. They jumped into a Tusker ambush outnumbered 2:1 and managed to seriously bloody our nose. If they had moved on to either our Jag or our Ishkur, they might have even taken a second ship with them.

On reflection, I wish we had been able to offer a more even fight; they were quality pilots who would have really put us to the test (or me, at least). Unfortunately, our intitial intel and subsequent movements in local led us to believe that they were part of a larger gang until the fight was well under way.

Because we lost the Wolf, we were not expecting the fight to be profitable; any loot would go to Grog Drinker to reimburse him. However, Lady Luck decided to bestow her favours on us that day, and EACH of the three wrecks dropped an intact armor plate as salvage. We each walked away with about 20million ISK in profit.

Note to self: salvage all T2 wrecks!

Vengeance v Wolf

The hunt:

I was passing through Hevrice, moving from a northern roam to a southern roam, when I saw an interceptor on D-scan. Quickly scanning it down, I jumped in. En route, I loaded Caldari Navy Phalanx, which is superior to Rage when fighting fast targets, and also has greater range.

The interceptor was leaving as I landed. Unfortunately, I did not catch his destination, so I quickly started to scan him down again. Before I could do so, however, a Wolf landed on the belt with me!

It was toothslayer, also hunting the interceptor. He was not about to waste his opportunity for a rematch, though; he locked me and moved to intercept.

At this point, I had a split second to make three very important decisions:

1) Was I going to stay and fight, or was I going to try and warp out? This one was easy. Of course I was staying.

2) Was I going to reload, or go with what I had in the launchers? This was much tougher. Although my damage type was probably correct, Caldari Navy rockets don't pack the same punch as Rage rockets against targets slower than 600m/s (after being webbed). Switching ammo would leave me with a 10 second dps hole, though. I decided to go with the ammo I had loaded.

3) Was I going to fight up close, or at range? Another tough one. Wolves get a range bonus, but fighting in his falloff should still reduce his dps slightly. It might also push him to use barrage, which hit my best resists. On the other hand, I could try getting under his guns, because Wolves have no tracking bonus. Of course, that's why some Wolves use high tracking guns and tracking rigs. Without time to look at his probable fit, I decided to stay at range, largely because I already had range on my side.

So I moved into a wide orbit - about 5km, which actually left me about 7km from him due to my angular momentum. Scraming and webbing him, I opened fire.

Toothslayer returned the favour, and I was shocked by just how much damage a Wolf can put out when it wants to. I immediately overheated my guns and my repair system, knowing that this would be a very close fight.

I wish I could say that I did something clever at this point, but all I could do is watch things play out. I had complete control of the range, and it was a straight up damage race. A very, very close race.

We both entered structure together. I was aware that I could use my range dictation to escape, but that's just not how I fly. Unless a fight is obviously hopeless, I'm in it all the way.

So, deeper into structure we went. One moment I would be winning, when I received a boost from the repair system, and the next I would be losing, as his dps brought me back down. In the end, though, the timing of my repair cycles was such that I exploded an instant before him - he was between ten and twenty percent structure when I went down.

Sadly, a lag storm meant that I also lost my pod, although it was a pvp clone with only two +2 implants, so the loss was manageable.

Afterthoughts:

A real nail biter of a fight. After the fight I asked in corp chat whether I should have gone in close or stayed at range, and opinions were divided. If I chose poorly, then, it least it was not an obvious mistake.

The fight was so very, very close to being a win. If I had time to change ammo before the fight, I probably would have won. If I had not had rat aggro, I probably would have won. If I had a dps rig instead of a cap rig, I probably would have won. So very, very close.

While my next hull is already rigged for cap, the hull after that will be rigged for dps. It's time I actually gave that setup a try.

Vengeance v Jaguar

The hunt:

So there's this guy that recently moved to Hevrice. He's not a Tusker, but he still feels that setting up in our station is a good idea. Solo. He's probably crazy, but it's the kind of crazy I respect - you simply have to admire the audacity.

I don't know exactly what his deal is, but he certainly does not shy away from the good fights, which is probably part of why he moved to Hev. I had just undocked when I saw his Jaguar on D-scan at the sun; someone was spoiling for a fight, so I warped to zero.

I landed outside of scram range, but he was happy to close the distance for me, and we hurtled towards each other. Activating my launchers and mids, I set my orbit as close as possible. I had no illusions about getting under his guns, but the Jag's speed meant that he could disengage at will, and the closer he started in the fight, the further he had to run.

However, I changed my mind once he started trying to neut me. Instead, I tried to move to a wider orbit so that I was outside the neut's optimal. He used his control of the range to keep me close, though, and he was able to keep neuting.

Now, I vacillate back and forth about putting a capacitor control circuit or a damage rig on my Vengeance. Here, though, the control circuit was golden. While I could not perma-run my repair system, it did allow me to keep up periodic rep cycles, which kept me in the fight. Of course, juggling all my modules still required every ounce of concentration.

I overheated my repair system; if I was only going to get a few reps, I wanted them to repair for as much as possible. Then I overheated my launchers; this looked like it was going to be a straight up race.

My philosophy of frigate fighting is sustainability; I want my ship to be able to keep doing what it's doing indefinitely if I have to. I'm not that great of a pilot, and my reaction time leaves a lot to be desired, but if I can just grind the other guy down or run him out of resources I can still win. This is why I rarely overheat at the beginning of a fight (point excepted, for obvious reasons), and why I don't run on cap boosters and the like.

The Jaguar, however, like most Minmatar pilots, was operating on a "fast & furious" model, which has it's advantages to be sure; there's a reason why nearly everyone flies their frigates that way. However, if you can weather the initial storm, the performance of these ships tends to fall off over time. And so it was here.

In addition to burning out his midslots, he also ran out of cap in his efforts to neut me. This handed me complete control over the range of the fight, and also eliminated his means of escape. Moving into his falloff and beyond the range of his neut, I repaired to full and pounded his ship to dust.

Although the fight ended on a rather anticlimactic note - I had taken complete control of the fight - it was actually a fairly close call. Only my absurd cap regen and my module management let me outlast his overheat phase. Even then, it was a fairly close call, and there were "gfs" in local on both sides of the fight.

I also thought that we were fairly evenly matched, which probably means that he has his AFs maxed out. I look forward to our next encounter.

Vengeance v Ishkur

The hunt:

I had just jumped from Hevrice to Jov, when I saw an Ishkur sitting on the Jov side of the gate. Not a flashy pilot, I could not engage her without triggering the gate guns. Thinking for a moment, I elected to do nothing - I just sat there, unmoving, and let my cloak expire.

Shortly after becoming visible, the Ishkur decided to come over and take a look. She targeted me and launched drones, but did not immediately engage; perhaps she was switching ammo types. After a few seconds of no action, she decided to engage me and opened fire.

I immediately turned on all my mods, including the armor repair system; baiting the Ishkur had essentially required the sacrifice of my shields, as my lack of transversal meant she was hitting for max damage with everything.

Knowing that blasters suffered from short range, I tried to open my orbit, but the Ishkur pilot had the range control, and I struggled to get out of her blaster's optimal. Seeing that we were very evenly matched, I overheated my repair system and my rockets, trying to catch up in the damage race. I briefly considered going after her drones, but killing them efficiently would demand my web, and then the Ishkur could just disengage. Equally, I would need to switch out the Rage rockets I had loaded, which would give her even more of a head start on the damage race.

At some point, the Ishkur decided that things were getting a little too close for comfort, and decided to use her range dictation to try and escape. I did not notice at first, because I had been trying to open my orbit, and I assumed that I had finally succeeded. As the distance between us continued to increase, however, I recognized the escape attempt for what it was.

Hitting "approach", I overheated my scram, web and afterburner. Unfortunately, I needed to kill the overheat on my repair system to stop it burning out, but I was only taking drone damage at the moment, so I had some breathing space. With my afterburners overheated, the Ishkur's speed advantage was reduced to a few m/s. Still, she had managed to put nearly 10km between us - my align time is not that great, so even though I noticed the escape before then, coming about gave her another second or two to run - and she was within striking distance of safety.

Worse, my dps had dropped to zero because she had out ranged my Rage rockets. While the same was true of her blasters, her drones kept me from repping back up to full armor. While her active tank was nowhere near as strong as mine, she had no damage holding her back. She must have been having cap issues, though, because she did not repair as much as I feared she would.

At some point in our slow motion race, the tide turned. Perhaps she needed to kill the overheat on her afterburner to avoid burnout. Perhaps she missed an afterburner cycle when her repair system capped her out. Whatever it was, I began closing the distance again.

As soon as I could, I killed the overheat on my point and web - both were near burnout, and I could not afford to lose them. My launchers had also almost reached critical, despite the break I had given them while the Ishkur was out of range. I could not afford to overheat them again, so I simply opened fire once I thought I could start landing hits.

At this point, the Ishkur was at about 25% shields, 50% armor, and 90% structure. My armor had been holding at about 50%, but I was now taking damage from the blasters again. Having not considered the matter during our chase, I found myself needing to reload, giving the Ishkur further respite.

After an agonizing 10 seconds, I opened fire again, stripping away sheilds and eating into armor. At some point, I had been joined on the gate by Nalanthii in a Rupture, who offered me assistance. We both knew this was simply a gesture; he would have managed to land only a few hits before being forced to warp off by the gate guns.

As the Ishkur hit about 25% armor, the overheat from my afterburners burned out my web; what little range control I had was now gone. Risking everything, I threw my launchers back onto overheat, trying to destroy the Ishkur before she escaped.

Finishing her armor, I started into structure, gritting my teeth at the obscene amount of hull built into Gallente ships. As I chewed away at her last remaining tank, I lost both my afterburner and my point; my mids had burned out completely, and she was now free to warp away.

She kept trying to pull range, though, oblivious to the fact that my point had dropped. Somehow, my launchers kept firing, despite the overheat running up and down my hull. The distance continued to grow, and soon the Ishkur would hit warp range. One last volley sealed her fate, however, and the Ishkur exploded!

Afterthoughts:

A very, very, intense fight. Absolutely awesome.

Overheat tends not to play a big role in my fights. I largely try and permatank damage while grinding down my opponent. This does not lean heavily on Thermodynamics, which is why I only have it at level III. After this fight, however, I took a break from training Warhead Upgrades V and put Thermodynamics IV in the queue.

I'm largely happy with how this fight went, and my tactics and responses. I obviously missed a trick by not reloading while she was out of range, and I got lucky in the last few seconds of the fight, when the Ishkur could simply have warped away.

The Ishkur's range control also underscores the need for me to max out my nav and range skills soon - they are already all at IV, but that last, final level in each skill will make a huge difference. Warhead Upgrades V is my last dps skill, and that should finish up in a week or two. From there, it's all navigation and range.

I also need to take another look at my fit; I have perfect cap skills now, which means I can drop the Capacitor Control Circuit if I want to. While it did allow me to run my overheat while being cap stable (which is not the case if I drop the CCC) an extra 10% damage would have been a huge help here.

Finally, I should try and sneak Salvaging IV into my training; I made more off the salvage than I did off the dropped mods, and I am currently unable to salvage T2 ships. Food for thought.
